ROMAN BERRY

An invitation for a visit
Roman art in Berry is art that goes as high as men’s expectations and is never strange to us. This art is neither static nor frozen, and is always looking for stability and balance; it uses a human language, where beauty is never far from the heart, with shapes and images that carry an imprint of the soul of which the modern world has kept the nostalgia.

Architectural characteristics
If one can refer to a « berrichon » roman art, there is definitely a roman art in Berry and it has 3 specific characteristics :

- an opposition between the vaulted chancel and the nave
- a studied elegance in the façade, very often round one doorway
- a triangular gable in the blind arcature façade
- "passages berrichons" (walkways) allow access from the unique nave to the transept.

The sculpture
The directory of the transepts is divided into 2 unequal major categories :
- the transepts with fauna or flora decorations
- the historian transepts, generally with sculptures of great beauty and high symbolic value.
The painted decor
There is no doubt that this is where roman artists from Berry have left behind true masterpieces. Brinay and Vicq pieces are well-known; they are the largest roman cycles following the one in Saint-Savin-sur-Gartempe. They are worth a visit. There are many more that are kept. The frescos are never a minor or poor art.
Their productions are remarkable, often exceptional.
