From north to south, this area is a transition between the « Bassin Parisien » (Paris flat area) and the Massif Central (mountains). Due to this location, there are 3 landscaped areas: the «Champagne», the forests and the enclosed fields. It the north, the “Champagne berrichonne » has been a cultivated plain since the 19th century. It was previously an area for sheep. There are still some areas of this past life in Périsse at Dun-sur-Auron. This is where the limestone plateau looks like a Causse landscape, where the flora is exceptional. Surprisingly, a few hundred metres away, there are 500ha of swamps (in Contres) between the forest and the « causse » (limestone landscape) and this makes an exceptional site, from the landscape point of view, as well as the fauna and flora. Following this road, the enclosed fields expand.
The Boischaut and the «Vallée de Germigny» (east) form a network of hedges that are more or less dense. The Cher and Arnon valleys and the rivers meandering through the meadows, sometimes flow down the hillsides forming magnificent landscapes: enclosed fields in Noirlac and Ainay-le-Vieil, limestone hillsides in La Groutte, floodable meadows in Arnon. Finally, if you go towards the Massif central, the relief accentuates, the rivers embanked in gorges; this is the “Marche” region. The sandy and siliceous ground has produced soil that is favourable for vineyards in Châteaumeillant. Between the “champagne » area and the enclosed fields, we should also add to these cultivated areas remarkable forests on the other side of the hills, such as the forest of Thoux which is classified as a national, biological reserve.
