PAYS LOIRE VAL D'AUBOIS

It is located at the junction of the areas of Berry, Nivernais and Bourbonnais. The « Pays Loire-Val d’Aubois » covers 1.100 km² and is bordered on the east side by the Loire and Allier valleys, and on the west by the cuestas from the Paris area.

This limestone and clay area, rich in wood and water, shelters several important areas for the conservation of birds, especially the Allier and Loire valleys where a natural reserve was created in 1995. Part of the forests (which form a wide central band) and some humid zones (ponds, rivers, confluence of the Loire and the Allier) are registered as natural zones with environmental interest in fauna and flora. In the area, there are diverse landscaped surroundings. Going from north to south, the « Champagne Berrichonne » cereal-growing plateau is replaced with hills and meadows with enclosed fields in the valley of Germigny. The agricultural reputation of the area, famous for its breeding of « charolais » cows, should not erase the importance of the industry, and even more its age. Since the Cistercian age craftsmen from the 12th to the 19th centuries, the « Val d’Aubois » has been a large iron industry region in a rural environment, which produced cast-iron and iron, and hand-made iron-objects. In the 20th century, the production of hydraulic lime, natural cement, tiles and bricks took over. The Berry canal and the Loire lateral canal have accompanied this industrial development which left behind an architectural and technical heritage which has no equivalent in France.
